FOSter grandparents program

The AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is a volunteer program that connects individuals (age 55 and older) with children and youth who have special needs or who are at risk. The purpose of the program is to provide support and mentorship by pairing experienced seniors with young individuals, often in schools, daycare centers, and other community settings.

The program offers a tax-free stipend of $4 an hour, mileage reimbursement, accident and liability insurance while serving, recognition, and opportunities to socialize.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Income: The program is designed for lower-income individuals.

  • Willingness to Volunteer: You should be willing and able to volunteer a set number of hours per week. Typically, this is around 15-40 hours per week.

  • Physical and Mental Health: You must be in good enough health to participate in the program, as the role may involve working directly with children, often in schools or daycare centers.

  • Background Check: As you will be working closely with children, you will need to pass a background check, including a criminal history check, to ensure safety.

  • Commitment to the Program: You should be committed to working with children, providing support, mentoring, and nurturing them over a period of time.

The MOVRC sponsors the program in Braxton, Brooke, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Hancock, Jackson, Lewis, Marion, Marshall, Monongalia, Nicholas, Ohio, Pleasants, Preston, Ritchie, Roane, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Webster, Wetzel, Wirt, and Wood Counties.

The Foster Grandparent Program is a part of the AmeriCorps Seniors program, which is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) in the United States.
